Silgan Holdings Inc is incorporated in Delaware and was founded in 1987. The Company is a manufacturer of rigid packaging for shelf-stable food and other consumer goods products. Its products are used in different end markets and it operates 88 manufacturing plants in North America, Europe, Asia and South America. The Companys products include: steel and aluminum containers for human and pet food; metal, composite and plastic vacuum closures for food and beverage products; and custom designed plastic containers, tubes and closures for personal care, health care, pharmaceutical, household and industrial chemical, food, pet care, agricultural chemical, automotive and marine chemical products. The Company and its subsidiaries conduct business in three market segments: metal containers, closures and plastic containers. Its metal container business manufactures and sells steel and aluminum containers for human and pet foods. Its closures business manufactures and sells metal, composite and plastic vacuum closures for food and beverage products. Its plastic container business manufactures and sells custom designed plastic containers, tubes and closures for personal care, health care, pharmaceutical, household and industrial chemical, food, pet care, agricultural chemical, automotive and marine chemical products. Its metal container businesses have operating facilities in North America, Europe and Asia. Its closures business has operating facilities in North and South America, Europe and Asia. The Company markets its products mainly by a direct sales force and for its plastic container business, in part, through a network of distributors. The packaging industry is competitive. It competes in this industry with manufacturers of similar and other types of packaging, as well as fillers, food processors and packers who manufacture containers for their own use and for sale to others. The Company is subject to federal, foreign, state and local environmental laws and regulations. In general, these laws and regulations limit the discharge of pollutants into the environment and establish standards for the treatment, storage, and disposal of solid and hazardous waste.
