Business Description

Sterlite Industries (India) Limited was incorporated on September 8, 1975 under the laws of the Republic of India. In June 2007 it completed its initial public offering. It is a non-ferrous metals and mining company with operations in India and Australia. The Company's main businesses are; Aluminum, Copper, Zinc & Lead and Commercial Energy. Its main products consist of copper cathode and continuos cast rods, as well as sulphuric acid, phosphoric acid, anode slimes, and gypsum. It also produces and sells zinc ingots for steel producers, as well as alloy, dry cell battery, die casting, and chemical manufacturers; lead ingots for battery and chemical manufacturers; and by-products, including sulphuric acid, and silver ingots mainly to industrial users and traders of silver. In addition, the company offers aluminum products, including aluminum ingots and wire rods; rolled products, such as coils and sheets for aluminum foil manufacturing, printing, transportation, consumer durables, building and architecture, electrical and communications, packaging, and general engineering industries. It also owns the Mt. Lyell copper mine at Tasmania in Australia; lead-zinc mines, which comprise Rampura Agucha open-pit mine and Kayar lead-zinc mine, as well as Zawar, Rajpura Dariba, and Sindesar Khurd underground mines in Northwest India; and zinc mines, including Skorpion zinc mine in Namibia, Black Mountain mine in South Africa, and Lisheen mine in Ireland. The Company's competitors in the copper, zinc and aluminum markets outside India include major international producers. The Company's business is subject to environmental laws and regulations.
