GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Schmitt Industries, Inc. was incorporated in the state of Oregon in 1995. The Company designs, manufactures and markets computer-controlled vibration detection and balancing equipment to the machine tool industry. The Company through its subsidiary, Schmitt Measurement Systems, Inc., designs, manufactures and markets precision laser-based surface measurement products for a variety of commercial applications in addition to the disk drive, silicon wafer and optics industries; laser-based distance measurement products for a variety of industrial applications; and ultrasonic measurement products that accurately measure the fill levels of liquefied propane tanks and transmit that data via satellite to a secure web site. The Company also sells and markets its products in Europe through Schmitt Europe Ltd., located in the United Kingdom. The Company operates in two segments: Balancer and Measurement segment. The Company's Balancer segment product line include Schmitt Dynamic Balance System (the SBS System), which consists of a vibration sensor, a computer control unit, and a balance head that is placed either externally on the grinding wheel spindle with the use of a spindle mounted adaptor or internally inside the spindle bore. It is designed as an inexpensive yet highly accurate permanent installation on grinding machines. The SBS products can detect and correct for vibration as small as 0.02 microns. Within the company's customer base for the SBS System, there are three market segments: machine tool builders, machine tool rebuilders and gridding machine users. The Company's primary competitors for SBS System are Marposs S.p.A., MPM Micro Prazision Marx GmbH and Balance Systems S.r.l. The Company's Measurement segment designs, manufactures and markets several laser-based precision test and measurement product lines and an ultrasonic product for measuring the fill levels of liquid propane tanks and operates a precision laser light-scatter measurement laboratory. The Company's Measurement segment offers five product lines: laser-based light-scatter measurement, dimensional sizing, capacity and volume of liquid storage tanks, research and other laser alignment products and a light-scatter measurement laboratory.
