Stein Mart headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida, is a national retailer providing the fashion merchandise, service and presentation of an improved department or specialty store. Its focused assortment of merchandise features current season fashion apparel for women and men, as well as accessories, shoes and home fashions, all provided at prices competitive with off-price retail chains. As of February 1, 2014, the Company operated 264 stores in 29 states and an Internet store that offers the fashion merchandise, service and presentation of specialty store at prices competitive with off-price retail chains. Its merchants purchase products from approximately 1,200 vendors. One of its vendors accounted for approximately 5 percent of the total purchases during 2013. The Company buys a majority of its merchandise at the same time and from many of the same manufacturers as traditional department/specialty stores, although it generally do not require the same level of front and back-end vendor concessions, such as advertising allowances, return privileges and markdown allowances, which are common and significant in the department store industry. It operates the shoe department and receives a percentage of net revenue in accordance with a supply agreement. Its stores provides many services mainly found in department or specialty stores, such as a merchandise locator service, a Preferred Customer program, co-branded and private label credit card programs and electronic gift cards. Each store is staffed with a number of sales associates to provide on-demand customer service. Its stores have their own Boutique, staffed by specially-recruited associates who mainly work one day a week. The Company's main competitors are department and specialty stores, as well as conventional off-price retail chains.
