GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Stein Mart was founded in 1908. The Company is a national retailer that offers fashion merchandise, service and presentation of a department or specialty store. Its focused assortment of merchandise features current season, moderate to fashion apparel for women and men, as well as accessories, shoes and home fashions, all offered at prices competitive with off-price retail chains. As of January 31, 2015, the Company operated 270 stores in 30 states. Its fashion assortment is driven by seasonal fashion trends and a focus on name brand and designer merchandise complemented by a select program of private label and proprietary/exclusive merchandise. Its stores are located in the Northeast, Midwest, Southeast, Texas and the Southwest. The Company is fully concentrated in the Southeast and Texas where 184 of its stores are located. Most locations are in neighborhood, community and regional shopping centers frequented by a more affluent customer. Its optimal co-tenants within these shopping centers cater to a similar target customer and include highly-frequented retail formats such as other apparel retailers, higher-end grocers and restaurants. All the locations, including corporate headquarters and distribution centers, are leased. Its stores offer many services typically found in department or specialty stores, such as merchandise locator service, a Preferred Customer program, co-branded and private label credit card programs, and electronic gift cards. It utilizes a combination of full-color circulars (both inserted in newspapers and mailed directly to homes), direct mail, newspaper run of press advertising, and email to distribute sales promotion messages. It utilizes digital media, Paid Search, Comparison Shopping Engines, Affiliate Marketing and Display Advertising to increase brand awareness and drive traffic to e-commerce site. It also uses social networking sites, including Facebook, Twitter and blogs. Its competitors are department and specialty stores, as well as conventional off-price retail chains. The Company owns the federally registered trademark Stein Mart.
