Senomyx, Inc. was incorporated on September 16, 1998 in Delaware and commenced operations in January 1999. The Company uses proprietary taste receptor technologies to discover, develop and commercialize innovative flavor ingredients for the packaged food, beverage and ingredient supply industries. It considers flavor ingredients to include flavors, such as savory flavors and cooling flavors, and flavor modulators, such as sweet and salt modifiers and bitter blockers. The Sweet Taste Program adds new flavor ingredients that allow a significant reduction of sweeteners in food and beverage products while maintaining the desired sweet taste. The Savory Flavor Program offers new flavor ingredients that mimic the taste of naturally occurring glutamate to enable the reduction or replacement of added monosodium glutamate, and to provide new savory tastes to foods by combining the company's savory flavor ingredients with other ingredients to create unique new flavors. The Bitter Blocker Program reduces or blocks bitter taste and improves the overall taste characteristics of packaged foods, beverages, over the counter, health care products and pharmaceutical products. The Cooling Taste Program discovers cooling agents that have advantages over currently available agents for a variety of applications. The Salt Taste Program identifies flavor ingredients that allow a significant reduction of sodium in foods and beverages yet maintain the salty taste desirable to consumers. The Company is also engaged in the discovery and development of natural high intensity sweeteners. It has collaborative agreements with packaged food, beverage and ingredient companies, such as Ajinomoto Co., Inc., Firmenich SA, Nestle SA and PepsiCo, Inc. The key elements of the company's Discovery and Development process are: Identification of Relevant Taste Receptors and Proprietary Taste Receptor-Based Assay Development; High-Throughput Screening and Identification of Potential Ingredients; Optimization of Lead Compounds and Selection of Product Candidates; and Safety Studies and Regulatory Approval of Product Candidates. The Company has in-licensed many of the key receptors that mediate taste in mammals. It is pursuing the discovery and development of flavor ingredients through five programs on sweet, savory, bitter, cooling and salt taste areas and also the development of sweet, savoury and salt flavour ingredients, bitter blockers and cooling agents.
