Business Description

Sport Chalet, Inc. was founded in 1959 when Norbert Olberz purchased a small ski and tennis shop in La Cañada, California. The Company was reincorporated as a Delaware corporation in 1992. The Company is an operator of specialty sporting goods stores offering a broad assortment of brand name sporting goods equipment, apparel, and footwear. As of April 1, 2012, the Company operated 54 stores, including 33 locations in Southern California, nine in Northern California, eight in Arizona, three in Nevada, and one in Utah, comprising a total of over two million square feet of retail space. These stores average approximately 41,000 square feet in size. The Company's stores offers over 50 specialty services for the sports enthusiast, including climbing, backcountry skiing, ski mountaineering, avalanche education, and mountain trekking instruction, car rack installation, snowboard and ski rental and repair, Scuba training and certification, Scuba boat charters, team sales, custom golf club fitting, racquet stringing, and bicycle tune-up and repair. Generally, its stores are open seven days a week, typically from 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Saturday, and 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday. In addition, it has a Team Sales Division and an online store at sportchalet.com. The Company competes with a variety of other retailers, including specialty stores and independent dealers; internet retailers and catalog merchandisers; department stores; vendor owned stores; mass merchandisers and discount stores; and big box sporting goods chains.
