Business Description

Sierra Monitor Corporation, a California corporation was founded in 1978 to design and develop hazardous gas monitoring devices for the protection of personnel and facilities in industrial work places. In recent years it has changed the focus of its business to the delivery of information technology for environment measurement and control by developing specialized embedded software that is deployed on proprietary hardware platforms. Embedded software enables data transfer between subsystems using protocol and physical medium translation. The Company's hardware platforms include original equipment modules for installation in customer devices and controllers, gateway boxes generally used by integrators for machine to machine (M2M) protocol translation and multi-component safety systems generally focused on gas and fire detection. By providing an intelligent interface, its products enable various machines, devices, systems and people to reliably communicate useful information for the measurement and control of various environments including buildings, plants and factories. M2M protocol translation devices, known as communications bridges, are sold under its trade names 'FieldServer' and 'ProtoCessor' to equipment manufacturers and systems integrators, mainly in the building automation industry where the market drivers are cleantech and energy savings initiatives. Intelligent gas detection safety systems that it manufactures are sold for a variety of safety applications ranging from oil and gas processing and chemical plants to wastewater treatment, alternate fuel vehicle programs and other users or producers of hazardous gases. These systems utilize features such as recorded event information, graphical displays on central computers and web server displays to allow users to identify hazards and problems before they evolve into incidents which, could cause production delays and might prompt evacuation of personnel and potentially even cause property damage and physical injury. It also supplies microprocessor-based environment control products to the telecommunications industry. The control products are used to monitor temperature, gas, smoke and other environmental and security conditions in remote structures such as DSL distribution nodes, fiber optic booster stations and cell-tower site buildings. The markets in which it participates are highly competitive and generally price sensitive. The Company's gas detection products compete with systems offered by Detector Electronics Corporation, Draeger Safety Inc., General Monitors Inc., Mine Safety Appliance Company and Honeywell Life Safety. The Company operates in a highly competitive industry that is subject to intense competition, government regulation and rapid technological change.
