Business Description

State Auto Financial Corporation is an Ohio corporation incorporated in 1990. The Company is a property and casualty insurance holding Company, which is engaged in writing both personal and business lines of insurance. In its personal insurance segment, it writes standard insurance covering personal exposures to individuals. The main coverage's offered are personal auto and homeowners. In its business insurance segment, it writes standard insurance covering small-to-medium sized commercial exposures. It offers a broad range of coverage's which include commercial auto, commercial multi-peril, business owners, fire & allied and general liability. In its specialty insurance segment, it offer commercial coverages that require specialized product underwriting, claims handling or risk management services through a distribution channel of retail agents and wholesale brokers, which may include program administrators and other specialty sources. Its specialty insurance products are written through its admitted and non-admitted insurers. Its specialty insurance segment is organized into the following three units: RED unit; Rockhill unit; and Workers' Compensation unit. It markets a line of property and casualty insurance products through independent agencies. It's subsidiaries provides investment management services to affiliated insurance companies; S.I.S., a developer and seller of insurance-related software; and 518 PML, which owns and leases property to affiliated companies. It markets its personal and business insurance through approximately 3,000 retail agencies. The Company's investment portfolio is managed to provide growth of statutory surplus to facilitate increased premium writings over the long term while maintaining the ability to fund current insurance operations. The Company is subject to extensive regulation in the states in which it conducts business.
