GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the companyย’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
ย•ย•3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rankย•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Business Description

Star Scientific, Inc. is a technology-oriented company with a mission to promote maintenance of a healthy metabolism and lifestyle. The Company, recently, has been focusing primarily on the anti-inflammatory aspects of anatabine, an alkaloid found in the Solanacea family of plants, which includes potatoes, tomatoes, and eggplants, and the potential for licensing opportunities related to its products and underlying technology. Currently, Rock Creek Pharmaceuticals manufactures and sells two nutraceutical dietary supplements designed to promote the maintenance of a healthy metabolism: Anatabloc, for anti-inflammatory support, and CigRx, for assistance in fighting the urge to smoke cigarettes. In addition, Rock Creek Pharmaceuticals has been engaged in the development of other dietary supplements and pharmaceutical products, particularly products that have a botanical-based component and that are designed to provide nutritional support in a range of neurological conditions, including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, schizophrenia, depression, and Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Most recently, Rock Creek Pharmaceuticals has been involved in the development of a cosmetic line of products that utilizes its anatabine compound to improve the appearance of the skin. In June 2003, Star expanded its dissolvable smokeless tobacco product line with the test-market launch of Stonewall Hard Snuff. This product is as an innovative alternative for adult users of traditional smokeless products like moist snuff and chewing tobacco. Like Ariva, Stonewall Hard Snuff is made with StarCured tobacco and is a 'spit-free' tobacco product that dissolves completely in the user's mouth. It also appears to be very helpful to smokers who use more than 1.5 pack of cigarettes per day. Stonewall Hard Snuff is available in roughly 3000 stores in Texas and is sold in many tobacco shops, service station mini-marts and convenience store chains throughout the United States. In late 2008, Star Tobacco developed a new methodology for growing and curing ultra-low nitrosamine tobacco (US Patent pending), and has prepared a new version of its existing pre-2007 Ariva and Stonewall dissolvable smokeless tobacco products. These new products, Ariva BDL and Stonewall BDL, have ultra-low levels of tobacco specific nitrosamines, very low levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and controlled levels of nicotine compared to conventional popular smokeless tobacco products.
