Business Description

Symetra Financial Corporation is a Delaware corporation that, through its subsidiaries, offers group and individual insurance products and retirement products, including annuities marketed through benefits consultants, financial institutions and independent agents and advisors in all states and the District of Columbia. The company operates in five segments: Benefits, Deferred Annuities, Income Annuities, Life and Other. In benefits segment it offers medical stop-loss insurance, limited benefit medical plans, group life insurance, accidental death and dismemberment insurance and disability income insurance mainly to employer groups of 50 to 5,000 individuals. In addition to insurance products Benefits offers managing general underwriting, or MGU, services. In Deferred Annuities the company offers fixed and variable deferred annuities to consumers who want to accumulate tax-deferred assets for retirement. In Income Annuities it offers single premium immediate annuities, or SPIAs, to customers seeking a reliable source of retirement income or to protect against outliving their assets during retirement, and structured settlement annuities to fund third party personal injury settlements. In addition, Income Annuities offers funding services options to existing structured settlement clients. The company in Life Division offers a wide array of insurance products such as term and universal life insurance including single-premium life insurance, as well as BOLI and its other segment consists of unallocated corporate income, composed primarily of investment income on unallocated surplus, unallocated corporate expenses, interest expense on debt, earnings related to limited partnership interests, the results of small, non-insurance businesses that are managed outside of its divisions, and inter-segment elimination entries. Its principal products include medical stop-loss insurance; fixed and variable deferred annuities; single premium immediate annuities; universal life insurance, including single-premium life (SPL) and bank-owned life insurance (BOLI), and term life insurance. The Company's insurance operations are subject to a variety of laws and regulations. State insurance laws regulate most aspects of its insurance businesses, and its insurance subsidiaries are regulated by the insurance departments of the states in which they are domiciled and licensed.
