••3. Consistency of the profitability

Sysco Corp through its subsidiaries and divisions, is engaged in the distribution of food and related products to the foodservice or food-away-from-home industry.

Sysco is a leading foodservice distributor in North America and Ireland, controlling more than 16% of the $295 billion market. The firm distributes more than 400,000 food and nonfood products to 425,000 customers, including restaurants, healthcare and educational facilities, and lodging establishments. While Sysco derives the bulk of its sales from North America, the recently completed tie-up with Brakes will bolster its position as a leading player in Europe, with sales from the region now representing around 10% of total sales.

Yacktman Focused Fund Comments on Sysco - Feb 06, 2017

Sysco (NYSE:SYY)’s shares contributed to fourth-quarter results as the company delivered solid earnings results, benefitting from improved case volume growth and strong cost-cutting. In 2016, Sysco expanded overseas, completing the acquisition of Brakes Group, a leading European foodservice provider. We think this will help provide the company with significant opportunities for growth for many years to come.

Yacktman Funds Comments on Sysco - May 04, 2016

Sysco (NYSE:SYY), the leading food distribution company in the United States, was a strong performer in the first quarter. After struggling for several years with significant margin pressure, Sysco has shown signs of improvement in recent quarters. The company also announced a $3.1 billion acquisition of Brakes Group, a leading European foodservices distributor, which could provide a platform for additional non-U.S. expansion over time.

Donald Yacktman Comments on Sysco - Nov 05, 2015

Sysco (NYSE:SYY)’s shares were strong during the quarter after Trian Partners, an activist investment firm, announced a large investment in the company. In August, two of Trian’s partners joined Sysco’s Board of Directors.

Trian has substantial expertise in the distribution industry, and we think they will add significant value to the Sysco Board. One likely area of focus is improving Sysco’s profit margins, which have compressed meaningfully over the last few years. The dangers of this point in the cycle are only exacerbated by all-time-high corporate profit margins. This dynamic reinforces our belief in owning companies which have the opportunity to improve their margins. We think many of our top holdings, including Fox, P&G, PepsiCo, Sysco and Coca-Cola, will be able to improve profit margins over the next several years while many companies struggle to maintain their current levels of profitability.
