GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Guru Investment Theses on Target Corp

Mairs & Power Growth Fund Comments on Target - May 22, 2015

On the other hand, last year the market thought the retail giant Target (TGT) could do nothing right while this year it can do nothing wrong (we disagree with both views). With all of its sales in the U.S., the company sources much of its merchandise overseas so the strong dollar boosts its buying power and margins. In addition, the company’s customers have benefited from lower gasoline prices. As a result, Target’s stock is hitting all-time highs. We view the stock as generously valued currently and have been using it as a source of funds to add to our positions elsewhere.

Bill Frels Comments on Target - Oct 20, 2014

Retailer Target (TGT) experienced a positive news cycle during the third quarter due to the public enthusiasm surrounding its new CEO, Brian Cornell, who has taken the high road in announcing positive changes concerning transparency and corporate accountability. While still underperforming as of the third quarter, Target seems set to advance, and indeed the stock was already rallying later in the quarter.

Should You Follow Whitney Tilson Into Shorting Wayfair? Lack of profitability and unsustainable business model will soon push Wayfair's stock below $10
Whitney Tilson (Trades, Portfolio) recently reveled that Wayfair (NYSE:W) is his largest short position, and he expects the shares of the company to fall under $10 within the next 12 months. This announcement came on the back of Citron Research’s claim that Wayfair is the most mispriced stock it has seen in years and gave it a price-target of $10. Read more...
Third Avenue Management Sells Stake in Target
Third Avenue Management (Trades, Portfolio), the creation of Martin Whitman (Trades, Portfolio), is guided by current balance sheets, not projected future revenues and earnings, when making investment decisions. While many of the gurus we follow struggled in 2014, Third Avenue Management (Trades, Portfolio) enjoyed returns in positive territory (4.88%). Third Avenue’s returns in 2013 were even better (18.84%); the returns in 2012 (27.48%) were better still.
