GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Titanium Metals Corporaton was formed in 1950 and was incorporated in Delaware in 1955. The Company is a producer of titanium melted and mill products. The Company's products include titanium sponge, melted products, mill products and industrial fabrications. Titanium sponge is the commercially pure, elemental form of titanium metal with a porous and sponge-like appearance. The first step in its sponge production involves the combination of titanium-containing rutile ores 'derived from beach sand' with chlorine and petroleum coke to produce titanium tetrachloride. Titanium tetrachloride is purified and then reacted with magnesium in a closed system, producing titanium sponge and magnesium chloride as co-products. Melted products 'ingot, electrodes and slab' are produced by melting sponge and titanium scrap, either alone or with alloys, to produce various grades of titanium products suited to the ultimate application of the product. Mill products are forged or rolled from its melted products 'ingot or slab'. Mill products include long products 'billet and bar', flat products 'plate, sheet and strip' and pipe. The Company's mill products could be further machined to meet customer specifications with respect to size and finish. Fabrications 'spools, pipe fittings, manifolds, vessels, etc.' that are cut, formed, welded and assembled from titanium mill products. It sells its products through its own sales force based in the U.S. and Europe and through independent agents and distributors worldwide. The main raw materials used in the production of titanium ingot, slab and mill products are titanium sponge, titanium scrap and alloys. The main raw materials used in the production of titanium sponge are titanium-containing rutile ore, chlorine, magnesium and petroleum coke. The Company's production facilities are located in the United States, United Kingdom, France and Italy. Its trademarks are TIMET and TIMETAL. The Company competes in the aerospace titanium market with Allegheny Technologies Incorporated and RTI International Metals, Inc. both based in the United States, and Verkhnaya Salda Metallurgical Production Organization based in Russia. UNITI, RTI and certain Japanese producers are its main competitors in the industrial and emerging markets. The Company's operations are governed by various Federal, state, local and foreign environmental and worker safety and health laws and regulations.
