GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Wallace Weitz Comments on Texas Instruments - Jul 15, 2013

Texas Instruments (TXN--$35)(TXN) TI is an analog semiconductor company which makes a huge variety of relatively inexpensive products for electronics and industrial customers. The company took advantage of its financial strength to make opportunistic capital equipment acquisitions during the last recession and over the years has been a prodigious repurchaser of its own shares.

From Wallace Weitz’s second quarter 2013 letter to shareholders.

Traded in other countries:TII.Germany, TXN.Mexico, TXN.Switzerland,
Texas Instruments, Inc. was incorporated in Delaware. Its operations began in 1930. The Company has three segments: Analog, Embedded Processing and Other. Analog semiconductors change real-world signals - such as sound, temperature, pressure or images - by conditioning them, amplifying them and often converting them to a stream of digital data that can be processed by other semiconductors, such as embedded processors. Analog semiconductors are also used to manage power in every electronic device, whether plugged into a wall or running off a battery. Analog segment includes the following product lines: High Volume Analog & Logic (HVAL), Power Management (Power), High Performance Analog (HPA) and Silicon Valley Analog (SVA). HVAL products include high-volume integrated analog products for specific applications and high-volume catalog products. HVAL products support applications like automotive safety devices, touch screen controllers, low voltage motor drivers and integrated motor controllers. Power products include both catalog products and ASSPs that help customers manage power in electronic systems. HPA products include catalog analog products that it markets to many different customers who use them in manufacturing a wide range of products. HPA products include high-speed data converters, amplifiers, sensors, high reliability products, interface products and precision analog products that are typically used in systems that require high performance. HPA products generally have long life cycles, often more than 10 years. SVA products include a broad portfolio of power management, data converter, interface and operational amplifier catalog analog products used in manufacturing a wide range of products. SVA products support applications like video and data interface products, electrical fault/arc detection systems and mobile lighting and display systems. SVA products generally have long life cycles, often more than 10 years. Embedded Processing products are the "brains" of many electronic devices. Embedded processors are designed to handle specific tasks and can be optimized for various combinations of performance, power and cost, depending on the application. The devices vary from simple, low-cost products used in electric toothbrushes to highly specialized, complex devices used in wireless basestation communications infrastructure equipment. Embedded Processing products are used in many markets, particularly industrial and automotive. Embedded Processing segment includes the following product lines: Processors, Microcontrollers and Connectivity. Processor products include digital signal processors (DSPs) and applications processors. DSPs perform mathematical computations almost instantaneously to process or improve digital data. Microcontroller products are self-contained systems with a processor core, memory and peripherals that are designed to control a set of specific tasks for electronic equipment.
