Business Description

Universal Truckload Services is incorporated in the state of Michigan on December 11, 2001. It is an asset-light provider of transportation services to shippers throughout the United States and in the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec. Its over-the-road trucking services include both flatbed and dry van operations and it provides rail-truck and steamship-truck intermodal support services. It also offers truck brokerage services, which allow it to supplement its capacity and provide its customers with transportation of freight by using third party capacity, as well as full service international freight forwarding and customs house brokerage services. It operates through a contractor network of agents and owner-operators who provide it with approximately 3,100 tractors and approximately 3,000 trailers. Customer relationships are primarily managed by its agents who solicit freight business directly from shippers and also provide dispatch and other services to its owner-operators. It competes for truckload freight primarily in the U.S. markets of the transportation industry. The transportation industry is extremely competitive and fragmented. It competes with asset and non-asset based truckload carriers, intermodal transportation, logistics providers and, in some aspects of its business, with less-than-truckload carriers and railroads. It also competes with other motor carriers for owner-operators and agents. The Company's operations are regulated and licensed by various federal and state agencies. It is also subject to various environmental laws and regulations and, among other things; its operations are subject to the risk of fuel spillage and the consequential environmental damage.
