Business Description

United Fire Group Inc. is engaged in the business of writing property and casualty insurance and life insurance and selling annuities. The Company's operation is divided into two business segments property and casualty insurance and life insurance. Its property and casualty insurance segment is comprised of commercial lines insurance, including surety bonds, personal lines insurance and assumed insurance. Its life insurance segment is comprised of deferred and immediate annuities, universal life insurance products and traditional life insurance products. All of its property and casualty insurance subsidiaries belong to one of two reinsurance pooling arrangement. Its life insurance segment consists solely of the operations of United Life Insurance Company. The Company markets its products through its home office in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and four regional locations: Westminster, Colorado, a suburb of Denver; Galveston, Texas; Pennington, New Jersey; and Rocklin, California. It is licensed as a property and casualty insurer in 43 states, primarily in the Midwest, West and South, plus the District of Columbia. Its life insurance subsidiary is licensed in 33 states, primarily in the Midwest and West, and is represented by 950 independent agencies. The property and casualty insurance segments compete with numerous property and casualty insurance companies in the regional and national market. Life Insurance Segment competitors include companies that market their products through agents, as well as companies that sell directly to their customers. The Company is subject to various state regulations requiring investment portfolio diversification.
