GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Business Description

Universal Forest Products Inc. is a Michigan corporation incorporated in 1955. It's a holding company that provides capital, management and administrative resources to subsidiaries that designs, manufactures and markets wood and wood-alternative products for DIY/retail home centers and other retailers, structural lumber products for the manufactured housing industry, engineered wood components for the site-built construction market, and specialty wood packaging and components for various industries. The Company's consumer products subsidiary offers a large portfolio of outdoor living products, including wood composite decking, decorative balusters, post caps and plastic lattice, and its garden group offers an array of products, such as trellises and arches, to retailers nationwide. Its subsidiaries also provide framing services for the site-built market and forming products for concrete construction. Its operating segments consist of the Eastern, Western, Site-Built, Consumer Products and Distribution divisions. The customers comprising this market are primarily national home center retailers, retail-oriented regional lumberyards and contractor-oriented lumberyards. The products offered to customers in this market include dimensional lumber (both preserved and unpreserved) and various 'value-added products,' some of which are sold under its trademarks. In addition to its conventional lumber products, it offers composite wood and plastic products. The Company currently supplies customers in this market from manufacturing facilities located in many different states and Ontario, Canada. It also provides framing services for customers in certain regional markets, in which it erect the wood structure. The Company is one of the domestic buyers of solid sawn softwood lumber from primary producers (lumber mills). It uses mainly Southern Yellow Pine in its pressure-treating operations and site-built component plants in the Southeastern United States, which it obtains from mills located throughout the states comprising the Sunbelt. The Company faces competition on individual products from several different producers, but the majority of these competitors tends to be regional in their efforts and do not offer a full line of outdoor lumber products.
