Amerco, Inc., was founded in 1945 as a sole proprietorship under the name 'U-Haul Trailer Rental Company'. The Company is a North America's 'do-it-yourself' moving and storage operator through its subsidiary U-Haul International, Inc. It is moving and storage company provides products and services to help people move and store household and commercial goods. Its customers are mainly household movers. Its moving equipment is specifically designed, engineered and manufactured for the 'do-it-yourself' household mover. Its orange trailers are also manufactured at these same U-Haul operated manufacturing and assembly facilities. The company provides two towing options, including: auto transport, in which all four wheels are off the ground and a tow dolly, in which the front wheels of the towed vehicle are off the ground. Also, U-Haul is North America's largest seller and installer of hitches and towing systems. U-Haul has one of North America's propane refilling networks, with over 1,080 locations providing this convenient service. Its network of propane dispensing locations is one of the automobile alternative refueling networks in North America. AMERCO has three reportable segments: Moving and Storage, Property and Casualty Insurance & Life Insurance. The Moving and Storage operating segment includes AMERCO, U-Haul, and Real Estate and the wholly-owned subsidiaries of U-Haul and Real Estate. Its Operations consist of the rental of trucks and trailers, sales of moving supplies, sales of towing accessories, sales of propane, and the rental of fixed and mobile self-storage spaces to the "do-it-yourself" mover and management of self-storage properties owned by others. The Property and Casualty Insurance operating segment includes Repwest and its wholly-owned subsidiaries and ARCOA risk retention group (ARCOA). The Life Insurance operating segment provides life and health insurance products primarily to the senior market. Its major national competitors in both the In-Town and one-way moving equipment rental market are Avis Budget Group, Inc. and Penske Truck Leasing. Additionally, it has numerous small local competitors throughout North America who compete with it in the In-Town market. The Company's truck and trailer rental business is subject to regulation by various federal, state and foreign governmental entities.
