In this environment, the Westport Select Cap Fund continued to perform well. Several issues stood out on the upside with three adding one percentage point or more to performance. United Rentals, Inc. (URI), the country's largest equipment rental company, gained over 21% in the quarter, adding 126 basis points***. The company continues to benefit from the gradual improvement in non-residential construction and the continuing trend to rent versus buy decisions on the part of major customers.

United Rentals Inc was incorporated in Delaware in 1997. The Company is an equipment rental company and its network consists of 529 rental locations in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The Company approximately 3,000 classes of equipment for rent to customers that include construction and industrial companies, manufacturers, utilities, municipalities, homeowners, and government entities. It serves four main end-markets in the North American equipment rental industry: commercial construction, infrastructure, industrial and residential. It has two reportable segments - general rentals and trench safety, power and HVAC. The general rentals segment includes the rental of construction, aerial, industrial and homeowner equipment and related services and activities. The general rentals segment's customers include construction and industrial companies, manufacturers, utilities, municipalities and homeowners. The general rentals segment comprises seven geographic regions-the Southwest, Gulf, Northwest, Southeast, Midwest, East, and the Northeast Canada-and operates throughout the United States and Canada. The trench safety, power and HVAC segment includes the rental of specialty construction products and related services. The trench safety, power and HVAC segment's customers include construction companies involved in infrastructure projects, municipalities and industrial companies. This segment operates throughout the United States and in Canada. Its main products and services are: Equipment Rental, Sales of Rental Equipment, New Equipment Sales, Contractor Supplies Sales, Service and Other Revenues. It markets products and services through multiple channels such as: Sales Force, National Account Program, E-Rentals and Advertising. Its competitors mainly include small, independent businesses with one or two rental locations; regional competitors which operate in one or more states; public companies or divisions of public companies that operate nationally or internationally; and equipment vendors and dealers who both sell and rent equipment directly to customers.
