GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Ventas Inc is a real estate investment trust with a portfolio of seniors housing and healthcare operations in the United States and Canada. The Company currently operates through three reportable business segments: triple-net leased properties, senior living operations and MOB operations. Triple-net leased properties segment consists of acquiring and owning seniors housing and healthcare properties in the United States and leasing those properties to healthcare operating companies under 'triple-net' or 'absolute-net' leases that require the tenants to pay all property-related expenses. Senior living operations segment primarily consists of investments in seniors housing communities located in the United States and Canada for which the Company engages independent third parties, such as Atria and Sunrise, to manage the operations. MOB operations segment primarily consists of acquiring, owning, developing, leasing and managing MOBs. As of December 31, 2011, the Company leased 929 properties (excluding MOBs) to healthcare operating companies under 'triple-net' or 'absolute-net' leases. The Company competes in the acquisition, leasing and financing of seniors housing and healthcare properties with publicly traded, private and non-listed healthcare REITs, real estate partnerships, healthcare providers, healthcare lenders and other investors, including without limitation developers, banks, insurance companies, pension funds, government sponsored entities and private equity firms. As an owner of real property, the Company is subject to various federal, state and local laws and regulations regarding environmental, health and safety matters. These laws and regulations address, among other things, asbestos, polychlorinated biphenyls, fuel oil management, wastewater discharges, air emissions, radioactive materials, medical wastes, and hazardous wastes, and in certain cases, the costs of complying with these laws and regulations and the penalties for non-compliance can be substantial.
