GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Werner Enterprises, Inc. was incorporated in the State of Nebraska in September 1982. The Company is a transportation and logistics company engaged mainly in hauling truckload shipments of general commodities in both interstate and intrastate commerce. The Company also provides logistics services through its Value Added Services division. The Company has two reportable segments- Truckload Transportation Services and VAS. Truckload segment is comprised of the following six operating fleets: (i) the dedicated services fleet provides truckload services required by a specific customer, generally for a distribution center or manufacturing facility; (ii) the regional short-haul fleet transports a variety of consumer nondurable products and other commodities in truckload quantities within five geographic regions across the United States using dry van trailers; (iii) the medium-to-long-haul van fleet provides comparable truckload van service over irregular routes; (iv) the expedited fleet provides time-sensitive truckload services utilizing driver teams; and the (v) flatbed and (vi) temperature- controlled fleets provide truckload services for products with specialized trailers. VAS segment is a non-asset-based transportation and logistics provider. VAS is comprised of the following four operating units that provide non-trucking services to its customers: (i) truck brokerage uses contracted carriers to complete customer shipments; (ii) freight management offers range of single-source logistics management services and solutions; (iii) the intermodal unit offers rail transportation through alliances with rail and drayage providers as an alternative to truck transportation; and (iv) Werner Global Logistics international provides complete management of global shipments from origin to destination using a combination of air, ocean, truck and rail transportation modes. The Company's Truckload segment competes mainly with other truckload carriers. Logistics companies, intermodal companies, railroads, less-than-truckload carriers and private carriers also provide competition for both its Truckload and VAS segments. The Company's operations are subject to various federal, state and local environmental laws and regulations, many of which are implemented by the EPA and similar state regulatory agencies.
