Wi-Lan Inc. was established in 1992 to develop and commercialize technology that made low-cost, high-speed wireless networking a reality. In its early years, the Company manufactured several generations of proprietary products and the inventions were also used in other products offered by industry. The Company is a technology innovation and licensing company. The Company develops, acquires, and licenses a range of intellectual property that drives products in communications and consumer electronics markets, which include wireless fidelity data over cable service, multi-mode wireless, bluetooth and V-Chip. Through both internal research and development and acquisitions from third parties, the Company has acquired intellectual property in the form of patents and patent applications in many different countries that it has licensed to more than 200 companies in telecommunications markets around the world. The Company's acquisition program offers IP owners who wish to sell their patents or portfolios an avenue to be fairly compensated for their inventions. This compensation often funds further research and development. The Company's partnership program, delivered through Gladios IP, helps patent owners monetize their IP without selling it. The Company's intellectual property (IP) portfolio of more than 3,000 patents is licensed to some of the world's largest technology companies and is embedded in millions of communication and consumer electronics products sold annually around the world.
