Whiting Petroleum Corporation was founded in 1980. The Company is an independent oil and natural gas company engaged in exploitation, acquisition, exploration and production activities mainly in the Permian Basin, Rocky Mountains, Mid-Continent, Gulf Coast and Michigan regions of the United States. During 2009, the Company acquired additional royalty and overriding royalty interests in the North Ward Estes field and various other fields in the Permian Basin in two separate transactions with private owners. The Company sells its oil and natural gas production to end users, marketers and other purchasers that have access to nearby pipeline facilities. The Company's oil and natural gas exploration, development and production operations are subject to stringent federal, state and local laws and regulations governing the discharge of materials into the environment or otherwise relating to environmental protection.
