GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Guru Investment Theses on Zebra Technologies Corp

John Rogers Comments on Zebra Technologies Corp - Jan 22, 2016

We also purchased shares of Zebra Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ:ZBRA), the leading global supplier of thermal printing solutions. A current holding in our small cap separate account portfolio (and also an Ariel Fund holding more than a decade ago), we added this bar-code maker to the Fund because we view Zebra as an industry leader with a strong management team, positioned to benefit from global demand for asset tracking solutions.

From John Rogers (Trades, Portfolio)' fourth quarter 2015 Ariel Fund Commentary.

Chuck Royce Comments on Zebra Technologies - Oct 08, 2014

The Energy, Information Technology, Materials, and Financials sectors also posted solid net gains in the first half. Zebra Technologies (ZBRA) manufactures specialized printers, including direct thermal and thermal transfer label printers and radio frequency identification (RFID) printers and encoders. The firm announced strong fiscal fourth-quarter results early in 2014 that showed accelerating demand for its bar code printers and consumables after a period of channel destocking. It’s shares jumped again in April on news of Zebra’s announcement of its intent to purchase Motorola Solutions’ enterprise business, which adds mobile computing and data capture to the firm’s existing portfolio of technologies. We were happy to hold a good-sized stake in the stock at the end of the period.

From Chuck Royce (Trades, Portfolio)’s Royce Premier Fund Second Quarter 2014 Manager Commentary.

Westport Select Cap Fund Comments on Zebra Technologies Corp - Jul 28, 2014

The Fund made one new purchase during the quarter, Zebra Technologies Corp (ZBRA), Class A shares (“Zebra”). This company has established a leading position in data collection and product identification and announced the acquisition of a unit of Motorola Solutions, Inc. This deal will expand Zebra’s market position into mobile and network solutions while doubling the company’s size and adding significantly to its earnings per share.

Westport Fund Comments on Zebra Technologies Corp - Jul 28, 2014

A new position was also established in Zebra Technologies Corp., Class A shares (“Zebra”) (ZBRA), a provider of industrial products used for data collection and automatic identification systems. When Zebra announced in mid-April that it would purchase the mobile-computing services unit of Motorola Solutions, Inc., its share price declined. Investors were concerned with the historical performance of this Motorola, Inc. unit, the fact that it was approximately the same size as Zebra and that the cash transaction would transform Zebra’s balance sheet from debt-free to heavily leveraged. Both companies offer bar code and radio frequency identification used to control inventories but service different end markets. The Motorola Solutions, Inc. unit will enhance mobile and network capabilities.
