Appliance Recycling Centers of America, Inc. was incorporated in Minnesota in 1983. The Company is involved in the business of selling new major household appliances through a chain of company-owned factory outlet stores under the name ApplianceSmart. The Company also provides turnkey appliance recycling services for electric utilities and other sponsors of energy efficiency programs. It is a retailer and recycler of major household appliances and generates revenues from: Retail sales of appliances at its ApplianceSmart factory outlets, fees charged for collecting and recycling appliances for utilities and other sponsors of energy efficiency programs; and selling byproduct materials from appliances that it recycles, including appliances collected through its ApplianceSmart factory outlets & Sale of carbon offsets created by the destruction of ozone-depleting refrigerants acquired through various recycling programs. It operates two reportable segments: retail and recycling. The retail segment is comprised of income generated through its ApplianceSmart factory outlet stores. The Company's recycling segment includes all fees charged and costs incurred for collecting, recycling and installing appliances for utilities and other customers and include byproduct revenue, which is mainly generated through the recycling of appliances. It uses a variety of methods to promote awareness of its products and services. Each ApplianceSmart Factory Outlet competes with local and national retail appliance chains, as well as with independently owned retailers. Its appliance recycling centers are subject to various federal, state and local laws, regulations and licensing requirements related to providing turnkey services for energy efficiency programs.
