Duke Energy Corp is an energy company. The Company operates in the US through its direct and indirect wholly owned subsidiaries, Duke Energy Carolinas, LLC (Duke Energy Carolinas), Duke Energy Progress, Inc. (Duke Energy Progress) (formerly Carolina Power & Light Company d/b/a Progress Energy Carolinas), Duke Energy Florida, Inc. (Duke Energy Florida) (formerly Florida Power Corporation d/b/a Progress Energy Florida), Duke Energy Ohio, Inc. (Duke Energy Ohio), and Duke Energy Indiana, Inc. (Duke Energy Indiana), as well as in Latin America. The Company conducts its operations in three business segments; Regulated Utilities, International Energy and Commercial Power. Regulated Utilities conducts operations through Duke Energy Carolinas, Duke Energy Progress, Duke Energy Florida, Duke Energy Indiana, and the regulated transmission and distribution operations of Duke Energy Ohio. Commercial Power owns, operates and manages power plants and engages in the wholesale marketing and procurement of electric power, fuel and emission allowances related to these plants as well as other contractual positions. Commercial Power's generation operations consist of Duke Energy Ohio's coal-fired and gas-fired nonregulated generation assets located in the Midwest region of the United States and wind and solar generation located throughout the United States. Commercial Power is responsible for the purchase of natural gas to its gas turbine generators. In general Commercial Power hedges its natural gas requirements using physical and financial contracts.
