Headwaters, Inc. was incorporated in Delaware in 1995 under the name Covol Technologies, Inc. In September 2000, its name was changed to Headwaters Incorporated. It is a building products company providing products and services in the light and heavy building materials sectors. It sells building products such as manufactured architectural stone, siding accessory products and concrete block. It conducts its business through the following three reporting segments: light building products, heavy construction materials, and energy technology. The Light Building Products segment designs, manufactures and markets siding accessories used in residential home improvement and construction which includes decorative window shutters, gable vents, and mounting blocks for exterior fixtures, roof ventilation, window and door trim products. The Heavy Construction Materials segment markets coal combustion products, including fly ash, a mineral admixture that may be used as a partial replacement for portland cement in concrete. The Energy Technology segment owns coal cleaning facilities that are capable of separating ash from waste coal to provide a refined coal product. Its customer base for its light building products in the residential home improvement and new home construction markets that include many retail customers and siding wholesalers across North America and to a lesser extent, in Europe and Asia. Its competition for resin-based siding products includes Ply Gem, Royal, and Alpha in the siding accessories market, Azek in the trimboard market, and CertainTeed in the specialty siding market. With respect to concrete masonry units, national and regional competition includes Featherlite, IPC Building Products, Pavestone, Revels Block & Brick and Jewell Concrete Products. Brands include Tapco Integrated Tool Systems, Mid-America Siding Components, Builders Edge, Atlantic Premium Shutters, Vantage, The Foundry, InSpire, and WellCraft. The raw materials purchased for resin-based siding products include polypropylene and styrene pellets as well as PVC. Its operations and those of suppliers and customers involved in coal-based energy generation, utilities, are subject to federal, state and local environmental regulation.
