GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

It manufactures steel mainly from scrap steel and scrap steel substitutes using electric arc furnaces, continuous casting and automated rolling mills. In the steel products segment, it produces steel joists and joist girders, steel deck, fabricated concrete reinforcing steel, cold finished steel, steel fasteners, metal building systems, steel grating and expanded metal, and wire and wire mesh. In the raw materials segment, the Company produces DRI; brokers ferrous and nonferrous metals, pig iron, HBI and DRI; supplies ferro-alloys; and processes ferrous and nonferrous scrap metal. The raw materials segment also includes its natural gas working interest drilling programs with Encana and Nucor's equity method investment in Hunter Ridge Energy Services LLC. It produces hot-rolled and cold-rolled and galvanized sheet steel in standard grades and to customers' specifications while maintaining inventories to fulfill anticipated orders. The steel mills segment sells its products mainly to steel service centers, fabricators and manufacturers located throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico and, increasingly, elsewhere in the world. The primary raw materials for its steel mills segment are ferrous scrap and scrap substitutes such as pig iron, DRI and HBI. The Company competes in a variety of steel and metal markets, including markets for finished steel products, unfinished steel products, and raw materials.
