GuruFocus Profitability Rank ranks how profitable a company is and how likely the company’s business will stay that way. It is based on these factors:

1. Operating Margin
2. Trend of the Operating Margin (5-year average). The company with an uptrend profit margin has a higher rank.
••3. Consistency of the profitability
4. Piotroski F-Score
5. Predictability Rank•

The maximum rank is 10. A rank of 7 or higher means a higher profitability and may stay that way. A rank of 3 or lower indicates that the company has had trouble to make a profit.

Profitability Rank is not directly related to the Financial Strength Rank. But if a company is consistently profitable, its financial strength will be stronger.

Valero Energy Corp was incorporated in Delaware in 1981 under the name Valero Refining and Marketing Company. Its refineries produce conventional gasolines, distillates, jet fuel, asphalt, petrochemicals, lubricants, and other refined products as well as a slate of premium products including CBOB and RBOB, gasoline meeting the specifications of the California Air Resources Board (CARB), CARB diesel fuel, and low-sulfur and ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel. The Company has two business segments: refining and ethanol. The refining segment includes refining operations, wholesale marketing, product supply and distribution, and transportation operations in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Aruba, and Ireland. The ethanol segment includes sales of internally produced ethanol and distillers grains. The refining segment includes sales of refined products in both the wholesale rack and bulk markets. These sales include refined products that are manufactured in refining operations as well as refined products purchased or received on exchange from third parties. The Company markets branded and unbranded refined products on a wholesale basis through an extensive rack marketing network. The principal purchasers of refined products from terminal truck racks are wholesalers, distributors, retailers, and truck-delivered end users throughout the U.S., Canada, the U.K., and Ireland. The Company's Specialty Products include asphalt, lube oils, natural gas liquids (NGLs), petroleum coke, petrochemicals, and sulfur. The trademarks and tradenames of the Company includes Valero, Diamond Shamrock, Shamrock, Ultramar, Beacon, Texaco - and other trademarks. The Company competes with many companies for available supplies of crude oil and other feedstocks and for outlets for its refined products. The Company's refining and marketing operations are subject to various hazards common to the industry, including explosions, fires, toxic emissions, maritime hazards, and natural catastrophes.
