Leading indicators?

in last 5-6 years of of studying investing, I have seen that stock market, on downside, is a lagging indicator. It lags 6 - 24 months behind the indications in the market that things are not looking good.

What are good leading indicators you watch for?

In 2008 crises, Bond market was much earlier predicting crash. Also on street, in Southern California, people were talking about housing bust much before it actually happened. Southern California is boom and bust market (very cyclical) as far as real estate is concerned so people there are more sensitive.

I found talking to friends in various industries also gives very good picture.
