BATTERYMARCH FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT INC Profile

BatteryMarch Financial Management Inc. is an investment management firm that is based out of Boston. The company was founded in 1969 by Dean Lebaron and Jeremy Grantham, both of whom have gone on to start other investment businesses. BatteryMarch Financial Management Inc. was renamed to QS Batterymarch Financial Management Inc. and, in turn, QS Investors LLC in 1999 and has grown from its inception to have an additional office located in London. Since then, the company has once again changed ownership to become a business subsidiary of Legg Mason Inc. The BatteryMarch name is now completely dropped with the integration of the company with Legg Mason Global Asset Allocation LLC in order to reduce the number of brands operating under the Legg Mason umbrella. The company conducts its research internally to make its investment decisions, allocating its assets in the growth and value stocks of small to large cap companies on a global scale. QS Investors utilizes a fundamental and quantitative methodology with a bottom up investment approach, benchmarking its performance against a variety of Russell, MSCI, S&P, and other indexes. The company invests most heavily in the finance sector, which alone makes up almost a third of its total asset allocations, and also invests in the information technology, health care, consumer discretionary, consumer staples, industrials, and energy sectors, among others to a lesser degree, in order of decreasing allocation. The firm holds over $8 billion in total assets under management spread across 48 accounts, all of which are discretionary accounts. QS Investors mainly caters to investment companies and investment advisors, which each make up approximately a quarter of its client base, and also provides services to pension and profit sharing plans, charities, state or municipal government entities, pooled investment vehicles, and corporations, among others, in order of decreasing clientele.
