BROWN BROTHERS HARRIMAN & CO Profile

Brown Brothers Harriman & Co. is the largest and oldest private bank within the United States, tracing its history back to 1800 when Alex. Brown & Sons was formed by Alex Brown and his sons. John A. Brown and Co. would be established in 1818 in Philadelphia and two of the other sons would establish Brown Brothers & Co. and William Brown & Co. in 1825 and 1810, respectively. Although the Brown Brothers would stop most of its lending business due to the panic of 1837, the bank would not close its doors and focused on currency exchange and international trade during the recovery period. The bank would grow and expand during the next decades, opening offices in Boston and London and joining the New York Stock Exchange by 1882. At the beginning of 1931, Brown Brothers & Co. would merge with Harriman Brothers & Company, an investment company, and W.A. Harriman & Co., forming the current company Brown Brothers Harriman & Co. The company would become a private bank and focus on commercial banking, unifying its securities marketing and underwriting businesses into Harriman, Ripley and Company. Brown Brothers Harriman & Co. would then focus on expansion both in its international presence and line of businesses through the rest of the 20th century, opening locations in Tokyo, Hong Kong, and Luxembourg, among other locations, and creating its first trust company and launching its first Private Equity Fund in 1989. Today the company has over 5,000 employees and provides its commercial banking, investment management, brokerage, and trust services, among a variety of others, through its locations in the United States, Asia, and Europe. Some of the company’s mutual funds include the BBH Core Select Fund, International Equity Fund, Limited Duration Fund, Intermediate Municipal Bond Fund, and Money Market Fund. Brown Brothers Harriman & Co. also works with a variety of ETF sponsors to introduce products on a global scale.
