Criterion Capital Management LLC is a hedge fund sponsor based out of San Francisco, California. The company was originally established in 2002 by cofounders Christopher Hawkins Lord, who is with the company as its managing partner, and David Kingston Riley. Criterion Capital Management is owned by its employees with the cofounders Christopher Lord and David Riley holding the largest majority ownerships in the company. The company utilizes a fundamental methodology to make its investment decisions, allocating its assets in the public equity and fixed income markets on a global scale. Criterion Capital Management invests using a long and short equity strategy across variety of sectors, all based on an approach that is “driven by primary research and proprietary modeling.” Criterion Capital Management focuses on a longer term horizon and evaluates “fundamentals as defined by underlying business drivers, end market growth, quality of management, competitive barriers to entry, customer switching costs, pricing power and sustainability of margin structure.” The company invests most heavily in the information technology sector, which alone makes up almost two thirds of its total asset allocations, and also invests in the consumer discretionary, making up another quarter of its allocations, health care, and utilities and telecommunications sectors, among other sectors to a lesser degree, in order of decreasing allocation. Criterion Capital Management now operates with 22 employees of which 12 are investment professionals and oversees over $4.5 billion in total assets under management both of the company’s total number of accounts and total assets under management have been increasing in recent years with its total managed assets growing significantly, increasing from under $700 million back in 2010 to well over six times that amount today. Criterion Capital Management currently caters exclusively to pooled investment vehicles and takes advisory fees in the form of a percentage of assets and various performance based allocation of profits from investments.
