FEDERATED INVESTORS INC /PA/ Profile
Federated Investors Inc. is a financial services company that was founded in 1955 by John F. Donahue, Richard B. Fisher, and Thomas J. Donnelly. The company would buy its first fund, the Income Foundation Fund, in 1956 and become the first fund registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940. Three years later the firm would have its IPO in 1959. In the 1960s, the company restructured itself to exclusively selling funds through brokers and institutions. Federated Investors would then create one of the first market mutual funds, Money Market Management, and create the first institutional only money market fund in the industry in 1976. It was during this time that the company would experience explosive growth, its total assets under management sitting below $100 million in 1964 to over $8 billion by 1980 when the company launched the Electronic Data Gathering Extension, the industry’s first online order entry system for purchasing and redeeming fund shares. The company would then be sold to Aetna Life & Casualty Company in 1982, moving its headquarters to the Federated Investors Tower in Pittsburgh in 1986. Federated Investors would then buy itself back from Aetna in 1989. The company would continue to lead the industry in the 1990s, establishing the subsidiary Federated International Management, which became the first U.S. company with approved money market funds for Europe. Federated Investors continued with its expansion and international growth focuses, forming an institutional sales force and furthering global investment research. The company would become a public traded company on the NYSE in 1998, bringing its total assets under management to $139 billion. The company focused on acquisitions to facilitate its growth in the 2000s, merging with Alliance Capital Management, MDT Advisors, Prudent Bear Funds, and Clover Capital Management. Federated Investors currently has 1250 employees managing over $364 billion total assets, offering its services through over 4700 client firms. Its notable mutual funds include the MDT Stock Trust, Kaufman Small Cap, High Yield Trust, and Clover Value.
