Highfields Capital Management is a private hedge fund sponsor that was founded in 1998. The company was founded by Richard Grubman, who is no longer with the company after his retirement in 2010, and Jonathan S. Jacobson out of, and continues to operate out of, Boston and is currently headed by Jonathan S. Jacobson, who was one of the company’s original co-founders and currently acts as the company’s CEO and CIO. By the time Grubman retired from the company, its total assets would reach $10 billion. The company holds a value oriented fundamental approach with a focus on the idea of “one team for one portfolio in one office.” Highfields Capital Management launches and manages hedge funds for its clients and invests its held assets in a variety of private and public equity markets on a worldwide scale. The company invests the most heavily in the consumer discretionary sector, which alone makes up over a third of its total asset allocations, and also invests in the finance, which makes up approximately another fifth of its allocations, information technology, energy, health care, materials, industrials, consumer staples, and utilities and telecommunications sectors, among others to a lesser degree, in order of decreasing amount allocated. Highfields Capital Management currently holds over $20 billion in total assets under management spread across 5 accounts with all of its accounts being discretionary. While its total number of accounts has not changed in recent years, its total assets under management has increased from $16 billion back in 2010 to its current amount today. All of Highfields Capital Management’s clients are pooled investment vehicles and the company explicitly states that “Highfields Capital and its managed funds are not open for investment by members of the public,” and “no offer of interests in such funds is being made or should be inferred” on its website.
