Vulcan Value Partners is an investment management firm that is based out of Birmingham, Alabama. The company was founded in 2007 by C. T. Fitzpatrick, who continues to have an active role in the company acting as the CEO and CIO, intended as a personal capital manager. Vulcan Value Partners’s goal is to concentrate on minimizing the risk of losing capital over its five year time horizon, believing that, if this goal is met, then “making money will take care of itself.” The company believes in long term ownership and evaluate business risks, assess people, and scrutinize competitive strengths before making its investments. Vulcan Value Partners conducts its research internally and utilizes a bottom up investment approach to make its asset allocations. The company invests in public equity markets in the U.S., focusing on small and large cap companies. Vulcan Value Partners invests its assets in a variety of sectors, emphasizing on the finance sector, which alone makes up approximately a third of its total asset allocations, and also invests in the information technology, industrials, consumer discretionary, energy, health care, and utilities and communications sectors, among others to a lesser degree, in order of decreasing allocation. The firm currently holds approximately $11 billion in total assets under management spread across over 1,600 accounts, all of which are discretionary accounts except for one. Both of Vulcan Value Partners’s total number of accounts and total assets under management have been increasing since its inception, with its total number of accounts growing from being in the 20s five years ago to its amount today and its total assets under management growing from under $100 million back in 2011 to well over 100 times that amount today. The company currently has 33 employees with a third of them being investment professionals catering to its client base composed largely of high net worth individuals. The company currently offers two mutual funds: Vulcan Value Partners Fund, and Vulcan Value Partners Small Cap Fund.
