US Indexes Rebound Friday

Nasdaq up 6.87% for the year

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 25,605.54 on Friday with a gain of 477.37 points or 1.90%. The S&P 500 closed at 3,041.31 for a gain of 39.21 points or 1.31%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 9,588.81 for a gain of 96.08 points or 1.01%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 36.09 for a loss of 4.70 points or -11.52%.

For the week, the Nasdaq was down 2.3%, the S&P 500 was down 4.8% and the Dow Jones returned -5.6%. For the year, the Nasdaq is up 6.87%, the S&P 500 is down 5.86% and the Dow Jones has a return of -11.95%.

Friday’s market movers

U.S. indexes rebounded Friday after their worst Thursday selloff since March. Investors were still watching coronavirus concerns with news on states where cases are rising and a report from the Wall Street Journal on New York’s response.

In the S&P 500, energy and financials led gains. The S&P 500 energy sector regained 2.52% after reports Thursday of rising oil supply. The S&P 500 financial sector was up 2.21% after falling Thursday following the Federal Reserve’s announcement to keep rates at near zero for an extended period of time.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • Export and import prices were released. Export prices increased 0.5% in May and decreased 6% year over year. Import prices increased 1% in May and decreased 6% year over year.
  • The Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index improved to 78.9 in June from 72.3.
  • The Baker Hughes North American oil rig count decreased to 300 from 305.
  • The 10-year Treasury ended with a yield of 0.704%.

Small-cap stocks

In small caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,387.68 for a gain of 31.46 points or 2.32%. The S&P 600 closed at 812.49 for a gain of 20.24 points or 2.55%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Growth Index closed at 9,571.59 for a gain of 187.88 points or 2.00%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Value Index closed at 6,979.67 for a gain of 228.28 points or 3.38%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,759.91 for a gain of 35.29 points or 2.05%; the S&P 100 at 1,393.26 for a gain of 16.47 points or 1.20%; the Nasdaq 100 at 9,663.77 for a gain of 75.29 points or 0.79%; the Russell 3000 at 1,771.06 for a gain of 24.36 points or 1.39%; the Russell 1000 at 1,682.92 for a gain of 22.22 points or 1.34%; the Wilshire 5000 at 30,961.47 for a gain of 425.31 points or 1.39%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 588.14 for a gain of 6.57 points or 1.13%.
