US Indexes Close Higher Again Tuesday

Nasdaq gains 0.74%

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 26,156.10 on Tuesday with a gain of 131.14 points or 0.50%. The S&P 500 closed at 3,131.29 for a gain of 13.43 points or 0.43%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 10,131.37 for a gain of 74.89 points or 0.74%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 31.37 for a loss of 0.40 points or -1.26%.

Tuesdays market movers

U.S. stocks ended with gains Tuesday. Investors were watching uncertainty over the China trade deal after comments from Trade Advisor Peter Navarro suggested there could be problems. Navarro and President Trump confirmed Tuesday that the U.S. and China are still heading in the same positive direction.

Other news highlights for the day included the following:

  • The Trump administration is considering new tariffs on aluminum imports from Canada.
  • The Markit Composite PMI increased to 46.8 in June from 37. Separately, the Markit Manufacturing PMI increased to 49.6 from 39.8 and the Markit Services PMI increased to 46.7 from 37.5.
  • New home sales increased 16.6% in May to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 0.676 million.
  • The Treasury held auctions for 119-day bills at a rate of 0.155%, 42-day bills at a rate of 0.125%, two-year notes at a rate of 0.193% and 273-day bills at a rate of 0.180%. The 10-year Treasury ended with a yield of 0.719%.
  • Apple said it would be replacing Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) with its own proprietary chips in the Mac.

In the S&P 500, consumer discretionary and technology led gains. In the S&P 100, the following stocks led gains:

In small caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,439.34 for a gain of 5.81 points or 0.41%. The S&P 600 closed at 828.10 for a gain of 2.97 points or 0.36%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Growth Index closed at 10,018.73 for a gain of 49.68 points or 0.50%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Value Index closed at 6,955.31 for a loss of 4.18 points or -0.06%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,792.47 for a gain of 2.13 points or 0.12%; the S&P 100 at 1,442.82 for a gain of 9.08 points or 0.63%; the Nasdaq 100 at 10,209.82 for a gain of 79.49 points or 0.78%; the Russell 3000 at 1,825.65 for a gain of 7.31 points or 0.40%; the Russell 1000 at 1,734.13 for a gain of 6.94 points or 0.40%; the Wilshire 5000 at 31,909.94 for a gain of 126.92 points or 0.40%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 588.53 for a loss of -0.88 points or -0.15%.
