US Indexes Close Lower Tuesday

Nasdaq down -1.69%

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 27,686.91 on Tuesday with a loss of 104.53 points or -0.38%. The S&P 500 closed at 3,333.69 for a loss of 26.78 points or -0.80%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 10,782.82 for a loss of 185.53 points or -1.69%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 24.03 for a gain of 1.90 points or 8.59%.

Tuesday's Market Movers

Stocks retreated after seven days of gains for the large caps. Biotechs in the Nasdaq Biotech Index ended lower for the day.

Stock highlights:

  • Kodak (NYSE:KODK): Kodak reported earnings. Revenue of $213 million decreased -30.6% year over year. For the second quarter the company reported a net loss of $5 million.
  • Kforce (KFRC): Kforce gained 22.6% following its earnings report Monday evening. Revenue of $343.02 million increased 1.2% year over year and beat estimates by $29.23 million. Q2 GAAP EPS of $0.47 beat estimates by $0.12.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • The NFIB Business Optimism Index decreased to 98.8 in July from 100.6.
  • The Producer Price Index increased 0.6% in July following a decrease of -0.2%. The Producer Price Index decreased -0.4% year over year.
  • The Core Producer Price Index increased 0.5% in July following a decrease of -0.3%. Year over year the Core Producer Price Index increased 0.3%.
  • The Treasury held auctions for 119-day bills at a rate of 0.110%, 42-day bills at a rate of 0.095%, 52-week bills at a rate of 0.140% and three-year notes at a rate of 0.179%.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,575.10 for a loss of 9.57 points or -0.60%. The S&P 600 closed at 919.79 for a loss of 0.70 points or -0.076%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Growth Index closed at 10,857.83 for a loss of 103.27 points or -0.94%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Value Index closed at 7,529.37 for a gain of 38.69 points or 0.52%.
