US Indexes Close Mostly Lower Friday

Nasdaq up 23.07% for the year

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 27,931.02 on Friday with a gain of 34.30 points or 0.12%. The S&P 500 closed at 3,372.85 for a loss of 0.58 points or-0.02%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 11,019.30 for a loss of 23.20 points or -0.21%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 21.89 for a loss of 0.24 points or -1.08%.

For the week, the Dow Jones gained 1.8%, the S&P 500 gained 0.6% and the Nasdaq gained 0.1%. For the year, the Nasdaq has a gain of 23.07%, the S&P 500 has a gain of 4.4% and the Dow Jones is down 2.25%.

Friday's market movers

U.S. stocks were mostly lower Friday. The major indexes ended the week with a slight gain. Retail sales increased 1.2% in July. Grocery, outdoor activity and online shopping were the strongest contributors. Retail sales in China were down 1.1%. Retail data overall showed that the pace of a recovery might be slowing. In Washington D.C., Congressional leaders showed no progress on stimulus actions.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • Retail sales increased 1.2% in July following an increase of 8.4%. Retail sales excluding autos increased 1.9%. Year over year, retail sales increased 2.7%, following an increase of 2.1%.
  • Business inventories decreased 1.1% in June following a decrease of 2.3%.
  • The Productivity and Costs report was released. Nonfarm productivity increased 7.3% in the second quarter and unit labor costs increased 12.2%.
  • The Federal Reserve released its Industrial Production and Capacity report. Industrial production increased 3% in July following an increase of 5.7%. Year over year, industrial production decreased 8.2%. Manufacturing production increased 3.4% in July following an increase of 7.4%. Year over year, manufacturing production decreased 7.7%. Capacity utilization increased to 70.6% in July, up from 68.5%.
  • The Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index increased to72.8 from 72.5.
  • The Baker Hughes North American oil rig count increased to 298 from 294.

In small caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,577.88 for a loss of 1.91 points or -0.12%. The S&P 600 closed at 917.90 for a gain of 0.33 points or 0.036%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Growth Index closed at 10,925.85 for a loss of 31.23 points or -0.29%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Value Index closed at 7,474.40 for a gain of 41.74 points or 0.56%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,949.56 for a loss of 3.06 points or -0.16%; the S&P 100 at 1,557.29 for a loss of 0.54 points or -0.035%; the Nasdaq 100 at 11,164.45 for a loss of 13.92 points or -0.12%; the Russell 3000 at 1,971.34 for a loss of 0.88 points or -0.045%; the Russell 1000 at 1,870.80 for a loss of 0.75 points or -0.040%; the Wilshire 5000 at 34,464.22 for a loss of-11.07 points or -0.032%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 614.09 for a gain of 2.35 points or 0.38%.
