US Indexes Close Lower Monday

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 27,147.70 on Monday with a loss of 509.72 points or -1.84%. The S&P 500 closed at 3,281.06 for a loss of 38.41 points or -1.16%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 10,778.80 for a loss of 14.48 points or -0.13%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 27.78 for a gain of 1.95 points or 7.55%.

Monday's Market Movers

U.S. indexes ended lower Monday, following other global markets. U.S. stocks showed some steep losses after also falling in the three previous days of trading.

Last week's catalysts included a prolonged interest rate environment from the Federal Reserve and controversary over when a Covid-19 vaccine would be ready.

Across sectors, materials, industrials and energy led losses. The Nasdaq 100 and S&P 500 tech sector reported gains. Stock highlights for the day included:

  • Roku (ROKU, Financial) up 17.6% on a deal with Peacock.
  • President Trump agreed (tentatively) to a deal with TikTok involving buy-in from Oracle (ORCL, Financial) and Walmart (WMT, Financial).
  • Investors are watching Tesla (TSLA, Financial) ahead of its annual shareholder meeting and Battery Day event Tuesday.
  • Zoom (ZM, Financial) and Fastly (FSLY, Financial) led gains across the board as investors looked to some work from home technologies.
  • In the S&P 500, PayPal (PYPL, Financial) led gains with a return of 4.06%.

In other news:

  • The Chicago Fed National Activity Index decreased to 0.79 in August from 2.54.
  • The Treasury held auctions for three-month bills at a rate of 0.100% and six-month bills at a rate of 0.105%.
  • Fed Chair Powell said the economy needs more government help in Congressional comments released before his House Financial Services Committee appearance on Tuesday.

Small-Cap Stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,485.25 for a loss of 51.53 points or -3.35%. The S&P 600 closed at 840.53 for a loss of 30.04 points or -3.45%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Growth Index closed at 10,471.47 for a loss of 251.81 points or -2.35%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Value Index closed at 6,753.11 for a loss of 293.41 points or -4.16%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,820.70 for a loss of 45.16 points or -2.42%; the S&P 100 at 1,519.40 for a loss of 11.18 points or -0.73%; the Nasdaq 100 at 10,980.22 for a gain of 43.24 points or 0.40%; the Russell 3000 at 1,922.29 for a loss of 23.43 points or -1.20%; the Russell 1000 at 1,828.17 for a loss of 19.80 points or -1.07%; the Wilshire 5000 at 33,549.57 for a loss of 411.96 points or -1.21%; and the Dow Jones US Select Dividend Index at 582.12 for a loss of 17.31 points or -2.89%.
