US Indexes Close Higher Monday

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 27,584.06 on Monday with a gain of 410.10 points or 1.51%. The S&P 500 closed at 3,351.60 for a gain of 53.14 points or 1.61%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 11,117.53 for a gain of 203.96 points or 1.87%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 26.19 for a loss of 0.19 points or -0.72%.

Monday's Market Movers

The major U.S. indexes continued a run higher, closing with gains for a third day. In morning trading, investors were pleased with economic data from China. U.S. trading also trended higher as most major global indexes ended with some solid gains Monday.

Across sectors, semiconductors and financials led gains. Stock highlights for the day included the following:

  • A judge halted the ban on TikTok downloads, giving time for a decision on U.S. buy-ins for the company.
  • In China, Alibaba (BABA, Financial) began a three-day virtual Investor Day event.
  • Uber (UBER, Financial) regained its license to operate in London.
  • Inovio (INO, Financial) fell -28% after the FDA halted tests for its Covid-19 vaccine.
  • Eidos Therapeutics (EIDX, Financial) led gains in the Nasdaq Biotech Index with a return of 11.91%.
  • Devon Energy (DVN, Financial) led gains in the S&P 500 with a return of 11.11%.
  • Trip.com (TCOM, Financial) led gains in the Nasdaq 100 with a return of 6.14%.
  • Westwater Resources (WWR, Financial) led gains across the board with a return of 32.21%.

In other news:

  • The Dallas Fed Manufacturing Index improved to 13.6 in September from 8.0.
  • The Treasury held auctions for three-month bills at a rate of 0.100% and six-month bills at a rate of 0.105%.

Small-Cap Stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,510.34 for a gain of 35.43 points or 2.40%. The S&P 600 closed at 858.07 for a gain of 23.14 points or 2.77%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Growth Index closed at 10,663.56 for a gain of 207.76 points or 1.99%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Value Index closed at 6,853.93 for a gain of 195.74 points or 2.94%.

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,860.27 for a gain of 43.00 points or 2.37%; the S&P 100 at 1,553.01 for a gain of 24.01 points or 1.57%; the Nasdaq 100 at 11,364.45 for a gain of 213.32 points or 1.91%; the Russell 3000 at 1,962.16 for a gain of 32.46 points or 1.68%; the Russell 1000 at 1,866.52 for a gain of 30.10 points or 1.64%; the Wilshire 5000 at 34,271.27 for a gain of 567.70 points or 1.68%; and the Dow Jones US Select Dividend Index at 587.26 for a gain of 10.30 points or 1.79%.
