US Indexes End Lower Tuesday

Trump requests halt on relief stimulus talks

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 27,772.76 on Tuesday with a loss of 375.88 points or -1.34%. The S&P 500 closed at 3,360.95 for a loss of 47.68 points or -1.40%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 11,154.60 for a loss of 177.88 points or -1.57%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 29.48 for a gain of 1.52 points or 5.44%.

Tuesday's Market Movers

U.S. indexes ended lower Tuesday. Investors were watching Capitol Hill, with several news headlines. President Trump is back at the White House and says he will participate in next week's debate. Trump also called on negotiators to stop any new relief talks until after the election even as Fed Chair Powell urged Congress for more support in virtual comments at a National Association for Business Economics meeting, causing share prices to drop.

FAANG stocks were lower Tuesday as reports suggested the government is pushing for breakups:

  • The August balance of trade report was released, showing a deficit of -$67.1 billion. Exports were $171.9 billion and imports were $239.0 billion.
  • The Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey showed job openings of 6.493 million in August, down from 6.697 million.
  • The Treasury held auctions for 119-day bills at a rate of 0.105%, 42-day bills at a rate of 0.090%, three-year notes at a rate of 0.193% and 52-week bills at a rate of 0.140%.

Small-Cap Stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,577.29 for a loss of 4.67 points or -0.30%. The S&P 600 closed at 895.26 for a loss of 1.18 points or -0.13%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Growth Index closed at 11,085.70 for a loss of 33.62 points or -0.30%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Value Index closed at 7,159.24 for a loss of 27.23 points or -0.38%.
