For the week, the Nasdaq gained 4.6%, the S&P 500 gained 3.8% and the Dow Jones gained 3.3%. For the year, the Nasdaq is up 27.29%, the S&P 500 has a gain of 7.63% and the Dow Jones is down -0.40%.
Friday's Market Movers
U.S. indexes closed higher Friday and reported their best weekly gains since August. China's Shanghai Composite gained 1.68% after news of a better than expected September Caixin Services PMI.
Across sectors, semiconductors led gains. Across the board, the following stocks led gains:
- Xilinx (XLNX, Financial) gained 14.11% on talks of a merger with AMD
- Precigen (PGEN, Financial) 29.02%
- eBay (EBAY, Financial) 6.47%
- Amazon (AMZN, Financial) 3.01%
In other news:
- The energy sector was lower with Hurricane Delta causing concern for the Gulf of Mexico.
- Wholesale inventories increased 0.4% in August following a decrease of -0.2%.
- The Baker Hughes oil rig count showed an increase of three rigs in the U.S., an increase of five rigs in Canada and a decrease of 45 rigs internationally.

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,637.55 for a gain of 9.00 points or 0.55%. The S&P 600 closed at 926.19 for a gain of 4.12 points or 0.45%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Growth Index closed at 11,559.80 for a gain of 129.52 points or 1.13%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Value Index closed at 7,378.73 for a loss of 34.96 points or -0.47%.
