U.S. indexes closed with gains Thursday. Investors are expecting Moderna's (MRNA, Financial) Covid-19 vaccine to be approved, adding to supply from Pfizer (PFE). Moderna gained 5.09% for the day. The Nasdaq Biotech Index also led the day's sector gains, up 1.43%.

- 885,000 Americans filed for jobless claims, down from 862,000. Continuing jobless claims were 5.508 million, down from 5.781 million.
- The Philadelphia Fed Manufacturing Index decreased to 11.1 in December from 26.3.
