Highlight of last week’s top CEO buys. Related companies: Chesapeake Energy Corp. (CHK, Financial), Assured Guaranty Ltd. (AGO, Financial), Fannie Mae (FNM, Financial), CIT Group Inc. (CIT, Financial), Old Republic International Corp. (ORI, Financial).


Chesapeake Energy Corp. (CHK): Chairman & CEO, Director Aubrey K. Mcclendon Bought 50,000 Shares


Chesapeake Energy Corporation (CHK), the third largest oil and natural gas exploration and production company in U.S., reported a third quarter profit drop by 34% as natural gas prices fell from $8.39 to $7.41 per thousand cubic feet. The company earnings were $0.72, or $346 million compared to $1.13 or $523 million from the previous year.


Chairman & CEO, Director of CHK, Aubrey K. Mcclendon, bought a total of 401,800 shares the range of $33.44 to $38.47, since 6/07.


Guru Kenneth Fisher and Jean-Marie Eveillard bought 8,587 shares and 12,000 shares, respectively. While three gurus increased their holdings: David Winters owns 1,477,544, Ruane Cunniff owns 814,211, and Richard Snow owns 210,802 shares; Guru David Dreman decreased his holdings by 75.17% to 40,340 shares. Assured Guaranty Ltd. (AGO): Deputy Chairman, President, CEO, and Director Dominic Frederico Bought 9,652 Shares


After Assured Guaranty, Ltd. (AGO) reported that its board has approved the repurchase of 2 million shares, its stock prices jumped up by 3%. The company is in the business of providing financial guaranty insurance, reinsurance, and mortgage guaranty. For the third quarter, AGO lost $1.70 a share, or $115 million compared to a previous third quarter profit of $0.51 or $37.9 million. The company’s decline was due to “an unrealized mark-to-market loss on derivatives of $162.9 million.”


Last Monday, Deputy Chairman, President, CEO, and Director of AGO Dominic Frederico bought 9,652 shares at $20.26.


In the third quarter, Guru George Soros bought 9,290 shares; Guru John Rogers increased his holdings to 11,786,800 shares; and Arnold Schneider kept his holdings at 137,800 shares.

Fannie Mae (FNM): President & CEO, Director Daniel H. Mudd Bought 5,000 Shares


Fannie Mae, a government-backed mortgage lender, reported a loss of $1.52 billion for the third quarter simultaneously when Freddie reported a $2 billion loss. Fannie Mae is the larger government-chartered housing finance company compared to Freddie Mac. The company bought & packaged loans to sell as bonds. Fannie Mae sold $500 million in preferred shares at a 7.625% dividend rate to investors in mid-November. Over the last week, shares dropped by 10%.


President, CEO, and Director of Fannie Mae, Daniel H. Mudd, bought 5,000 shares last Wednesday at $32.20.


As of the last quarter, while Guru David Dreman increased his Fannie Mae holdings by 14.96% to 10,093,966 shares. Brian Rogers, NWQ Managers, Arnold Schneider, Kenneth Fisher, Ronald Muhlenkamp, Wallace Weitz, and Richard Pzena made little changes to their holdings. Gurus George Soros, Ken Heebner, and Ruane Cunniff sold out their Fannie Mae holdings.


A few insiders buys were made around $28.50 to $49.33: EVP of Capital Markets, Peter S. Niculescu, bought 15,000 shares; Director John K. Wulff bought 10,000 shares; Director Dennis R. Beresford bought 4,000 shares; EVP & CFO Stephen M. Swad bought 3,000; and lastly, Director Stephen Ashley bought 1,000 shares.


Fannie Mae has a market cap of $28.37 billion; its shares were traded at around $32.2 with P/E ratio of 17.54 and P/S ratio of 5.88. The dividend yield of Fannie Mae stocks is 6.2%.


CIT Group Inc. (CIT): Chairman and CEO, Director Jeffrey M. Peek Bought 3,000 Shares


CIT Group, Inc. (CIT), a commercial finance company, announced plans to sell its U.S. Systems Leasing business unit, worth $700 million in assets, to Macquarie Group Ltd. Vice Chairman Thomas Hallman is going to retire by December of this year. Mid-November, the company’s CFO Joe Leone said that mortgage is the only part that’s suffering.


Since early-August, Chairman and CEO, Director, Jeffrey M. Peek, bought 53,300 shares at an average range of $25.30 to $34.86. Another insider buy was made by Director Gary C. Butler, who bought 5,000 shares at $34.77.


While Guru Charles Brandes bought 977,115 shares, Guru John Keeley sold out his holdings in CIT. Guru David Dreman increased his holdings to 3,812,916 shares


Gurus Martin Whitman, Third Avenue Management, and Dodge & Cox kept their holdings nearly unchanged.


Large amount of shares were sold between $40.06 to $42 by Vice Chairman and CFO Joseph M Leone, and Vice Chairman & Chief Lending Officer Lawrence A. Marsiello: 34,500 shares, and 112,430 shares, respectively.


CIT Group Inc. has a market cap of $4.48 billion; its shares were traded at around $28.46 with P/E ratio of 16.66 and P/S ratio of 1.38. The dividend yield of CIT Group Inc. stocks is 3.5%.


Old Republic International Corp. (ORI): CEO Aldo C. Zucaro Bought 5,000 Shares


Old Republic International Corporation (ORI), a mortgage insurer company, is paying its toll this year from the massive delinquent loans. Some analysts predict that the entire mortgage insurance industry will continue to lose money in 2008, a break even by 2009, and make a profit in the subsequent year. ORI made a bold move by buying up stake in its competitors: 11% in MGIC Investment Corp, and 15% in PMI Group Inc.


CEO of Old Republic International Corp., Aldo C. Zucaro, bought 5,000 shares on 11/20 at $14.28. In 10/30, Zucaro bought 10,000 more shares at $15.15.


Gurus Charles Brandes, John Keeley, and Irving Kahn all upped their holdings in ORI stock to 4,393,627 shares, 214,354 shares, and 1,151,936 shares, respectively. Gurus David Dreman, Richard Pzena, and Chris Davis kept their holdings nearly unchanged.


Senior VP & CFO Karl W Mueller bought 1,000 shares of ORI stock on 10/30 at the average price of $15.1, the price of the stock has decreased by 5.43% since.
