Patrick Wolff is a chess grandmaster and twice American chess champion. After finishing his chess career in his early 20s and graduating from Harvard, Wolff went to Silicon Valley where he met Peter Thiel (Paypal founder and now hedge fund manager).

Wolff eventually joined Thiel's hedge fund (Clarium) after Wolff was bitten with the investing bug. Wolff stayed with Clarium for five years until moving to manage his own fund which was seeded by Thiel in January 2011.
