As the company name implies, the foundation of GuruFocus has always been the tracking of top investment professionals – “gurus” as we call them. After losing big in the dot com bubble of 2000, founder Charlie Tian, PhD had an idea:

“Why not generate ideas from the portfolios of the best investors? If I started from the stocks that some of the best investors had already researched, won’t my risk of being wrong drop dramatically?”

Since 2004 GuruFocus.com has been delivering this powerful feature to members and giving investors an inside look into the best portfolios on Wall Street. But we wanted to make it better…

NEW FEATURE: Multiple Guru Lists

Users now have the ability to track, filter and aggregate an unlimited number of personalized guru lists. This feature opens up even more possibilities for search and analysis. Fine-tuned groups of respected gurus can now be used in both the aggregated portfolio section and the All-In-One Screener. Let me show you how it works.

You are likely already familiar with the Personalized Guru List but if not, here’s a brief 3-minute video turorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNbGKKSqdS4. Your default list, found by hovering over the ‘Gurus’ tab and selecting ‘List of Gurus (Personalize)’, can be seen in the image below. The red box is highlighting the new button which allows users to create additional lists. Simply click the +New Group option and begin adding your gurus.

The benefits of this option are obvious. Maybe you want to track Buffett and other long-term gurus for your safer accounts but also follow a few distressed asset investors to find ideas for your more aggressive accounts. You might choose to build an international group to keep an eye out for valuable opportunities overseas that have consensus buying. Or maybe you just want to maintain a list of the largest funds by assets and use the aggregated portfolio feature to see where the big money is moving. There are limitless possibilities here and users are free set up groups in any manner they see fit.

Once set up, all of your groups will be accessible in the Aggregated Portfolio section. A dropdown box has been added which contains each of your personalized lists as well as the option to select all tracked gurus. By aggregating these customized guru portfolios, users can then order the list by portfolio weight, number of guru buys and sells, P/E ratio, dividend yield and more.

Users will find a similar option in the All-In-One Guru Screener. When choosing filter options under the ‘Gurus’ heading, the same dropdown box has been added to allow users to scan among each user-defined group. This additional criterion allows investors to identify stocks meeting their criteria that are also owned by the selected investment professionals.

Our hope is that this new feature will further your ability to perform diligent research and discover valuable investment opportunities. We make regular site improvements and feature additions based on user recommendations and will continue to do so in order to deliver the highest quality product available.
