In a significant development in the language assessment sector, Pearson (PSO) has announced a series of updates to its English language testing portfolio. The company is set to enhance the Pearson Test of English (PTE) by introducing two new speaking tasks—"Respond to a Situation" and "Summarize a Group Discussion"—along with improved AI-based scoring models. These changes aim to better evaluate real-world communication skills and will take effect from August 2025.

Further bolstering its offerings, Pearson will launch the Pearson English Express Test, a new one-hour online assessment, starting in Q4 2025. Initially available in eight countries, including the US, France, and Japan, the test offers rapid results, delivered within minutes, and verified reports within 48 hours. This new test is designed to provide flexible and accessible testing options, addressing the rising global demand for reliable English proficiency assessments.

Pearson has also expanded its global test center network by adding 30 new locations in 2025, bringing the total to 517 sites across key markets such as Canada, China, and Australia. This expansion is strategically aligned with Pearson's goal to capture a larger share of the high-demand migration and study abroad markets.

These initiatives reflect Pearson's commitment to advancing secure, accurate, and efficient assessments and catering to the diverse needs of governments, universities, and test-takers worldwide. With over 3,500 institutional relationships, Pearson continues to strengthen its competitive position against rivals like ETS (TOEFL) and Cambridge Assessment (IELTS).
