OpenAI has officially included Google Cloud in its list of suppliers, marking a significant step in diversifying its computing resources and reducing reliance on long-term partner Microsoft. The agreement, finalized in May after months of negotiations, aims to meet OpenAI's growing computing needs. This partnership is a major advantage for Google's cloud business, enhancing its competitive position against Amazon AWS and Microsoft Azure. The collaboration highlights the substantial computing demands of large AI model training and deployment, reshaping the AI industry's competitive landscape.
OpenAI's current cloud service providers also include Microsoft, Oracle, and CoreWeave. This diversified strategy is expected to strengthen OpenAI's negotiating power and reduce supply chain risks. Earlier this year, OpenAI collaborated with SoftBank and Oracle on a $500 billion Stargate infrastructure project and signed a nearly $12 billion, five-year cloud service agreement with CoreWeave.
The partnership with Google Cloud will support ChatGPT and its API in regions including the US, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, and the UK. This move provides OpenAI with a more stable infrastructure to meet the high market demands for AI assistants like ChatGPT and supports its future technological advancements.
